Introduction
There is a great deal of misunderstanding and misinformation regarding plant-based diets. “Plant-based diets” cover a broad spectrum of dietary disciplines and the definition can vary widely because of this diversity.
The basic premise underlying plant-based diets is that of improved health. As with any prescribed “diet”, there are sharply differing opinions regarding the effectiveness of changing to a diet that emphasizes reducing the consumption of meat and food sourced from animals.
Many may be surprised to know that engaging a plant-based diet does not necessarily mean the total abstinence from meat, although some followers do.
What is certain is that despite the skepticism of devout carnivores, a great many people are adamant that their health has been drastically improved by following the principles of one or the other sub-forms of this diet.
There has also been plenty of research into the effects of following a plant-based diet; of both patient outcome and to dispel fears that such a diet might be lacking in certain essential nutrients.
This document was compiled to provide a background on plant-based diets so that anyone considering switching to one might have an improved understanding of the philosophy, requirements and expected benefits.
